Be Bop A Lula
Gene Vincent
‘Be Bop A Lula’ – a 1956 chart hit – is considered one of the original rockabilly songs, written and performed by the American musician Gene Vincent, who is now considered a rock and roll pioneer. Vincent’s smooth vocal stylings earned him comparisons with musical rival and contemporary Elvis Presley, especially on this classic fifties track, which also harnessed a driving rockabilly sound, clean country-influenced guitars and one of the earliest examples of slap-back echo. The cacophonous scream in the background was allegedly by drummer Dickie Harrell, who wanted his family to know it was him on the recording!
