Johnny B. Goode
Chuck Berry
Opening with one of music’s most renowned guitar riffs, this rock and roll favourite from one of the genre’s pioneering artists comes in at number three. Chuck Berry was as much a rebel off-stage as he presented himself on-stage, and the lyrics to ‘Johnny B. Goode’ are considered to be partly autobiographical, telling the story of a down-beat ‘country boy’ who dreams of being a star. Of course, Berry was as good a guitar player as he made out in the lyrics to the song; this unstoppable track showcases his abrasive, fast-paced sound – an influence on the unique style of the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards.
